The “Her Chance to Be” Merit Scholarship aims at giving Lesotho’s high potential rural girls a chance to an exceptional education. The foundation identifies high potential girls from low-income families in rural Lesotho, and gives them a full five-year high school scholarship. We place emphasis on being more than just a source of financial assistance to our scholars; we seek to give them a scholarship experience that will launch them, after high school, into a successful career path as confident, young women leaders. This begins with ensuring that our scholars attend the best high schools in the country, and is maintained by providing platforms for continuous engagement with them. We believe in taking an interest in our scholars’ wellbeing outside the classroom, and giving them exposure, support and mentorship. HCTB scholars are sponsored in full (school and boarding fees, stipend, uniforms, books, boarding essentials, travel costs) by the foundation. In addition, twice a year, we host scholars in Maseru or another city for leadership, mentorship and exposure workshops. At the workshops, we instill a culture of academic merit, provide support and mentorship, and encourage public speaking and participation in leadership and humanitarian initiatives. Our scholars to date:
Limpho Lesenyeho, from Kolo, Mafeteng, HCTB Scholar at St. Stephens High School, Mohale`s Hoek.
Maipato Mafelesi, from Sekubu, Butha-Buthe, HCTB Scholar at Holy Family High School, Leribe.
Thandiwe Manana, from Makhalong, Qacha`s Nek, HCTB Scholar at St. Stephens High School, Mohale`s Hoek.
Mpho Matona, from Roma, Maseru, HCTB Scholar at Lesotho High School, Maseru.
Our pipelined project in this category is targeted at domestic workers, wherein we`ll offer them training in such areas as computer skills, entrepreneurship, farming skills, financial management skills, hair-dressing skills, and dresss-making skills. The goal of this project is to give the domestic workers a chance to find a better job or launch a business when they get out of domestic work.
